It is so hard to believe that I have been apart of Justin.tv for over a year now. So much has changed in a year. Some things good and some things bad. Through JTV I have had many awesome memories and met so many great people. Without Justin.tv I would never had joined twitter. I would have never started doing videos and I most importantly would have never started this blog. All this social crap I am into nowadays all began with Justin.tv. But lets take a look back to 1 year ago from my perspective.

5 days after they launched I discovered Justin Kan and JTV. The concept of the site was interesting to me. Before Justin came around you had 24/7 video broadcasts but the cameras were always stationary. The fact that Justin had a camera on his hat and it was streaming live audio and video all day long was just amazing to me. The 1st month had to be my favorite because you got to see these 4 guys try and figure out what to do with this startup. You were able to watch and listen to everything. In later months Justin would start muting the mic but in that 1st month you got to hear all the brainstorming and arguments. The epic battles between Emmett and Michael. The mysterious Kyle who wasn’t on camera much but we would hear about how he was a home wrecker. Of course you had Justin who would take the cam in the bathroom when he peed and pooped. It was more than just watching Justin all day. You got to watch the entire JTV crew sitting on the couches in a small apartment joking around and shooting ideas off each other. You also got to watch them deal with all the media attention and of course the people on the street wondering why he had a camera on his head

Nowadays you see the occasional person complain about chat but it is 10000x better than the early chat days. When the site 1st launched the chat was horrific. The early days with the old lingr chat was just horrid and it is painful to even think about. I can remember a small number of people started a chat on the efnet irc server because site chat was so bad. I used to spend most of my free time in that chat. It is also the 1st time I talked to iJustine who used to visit the chat once in a while before she started broadcasting. Also a JTV regular who is still around was in the chat all the time. That person being SprintNXT. I can also remember the old Peanut Gallery chat being a lot of fun. I really miss those days.

I could ramble on about this topic but I think this post is long enough hah. Let me end it by listing some of my favorite early moments on Justin.tv. Please feel free to list some of your favorite moments from JTV in the early days in the comments.

Of course everyone remembers the Police Raid.

GGJeffy and Justin in the elevator.

Justin’s first on air kiss

Justin getting kicked out of the Gap and then reading my email later on about how I called the store.

Justin’s love for the mustard shorts.

Losing reception in the elevator

Digh at the apartment wearing a GoDaddy shirt and Justin constantly looking at her chest. Goooodadddy!

The Weeblies and Kyle sneaking into the bedroom and stealing the camera while Justin slept.

Jumping in the pool after getting 100 diggs.

Like I said I could go on and on about this stuff. The great thing about JTV is that it has archives. The archiver didn’t work that well back then but there is still a lot of video archived from March and April of 2007 so feel free to go back to the beginning of JTV time and watch it from the start! Also check out some of the old Justin.tv fan blogs. Justin.tv The Real Cast and also Justin.TV Guide.

Justin and the crew are in the papers again. This time they make it into the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. In the NY Times article they touch on some of the statistics for Justin.tv after they opened it up to everyone.

Justin.tv formally declared that it was open for business to one and all. In its first five days, the company said, it created 18,500 hours of video and pulled in 500,000 unique visitors.

also we hear from someone who we rarely hear anything from. Stewart Alsop, from the venture capital firm Alsop Louie Partners who are one of the firms investing in Justin.tv.

“If there are 6 billion people in the world,” he said, “imagine one million people broadcasting live, 999,000 of whom are boring — but the other 1,000 are really interesting. – Stewart Alsop

Here are the full articles to check out. JTV continues to get positive press. Hopefully Justin and Justine will be able to get on a TV show together sometime.

For the second time this month Justine is on the front page of yahoo. This time it is for lifecasting. Justin and Justine are featured on Yahoo’s People of the Web. The amount of traffic coming to JTV from this article is staggering. At one point the number of viewers watching Justine was over 3,000. Which makes me cringe when I think of the chatroom. The chat goes by fast when there is under 200 viewers. Just imagine how bad it is when you have 3000 viewers trying to get Justine’s attention as they all scream “JUSTINE SAY MY NAME!!!!!!!” or “WAVE TO ME JUSTINE!!!!!!!!”
It is nice to see Justin being included in this story. He hasn’t gotten any big press in the past few months. For Justin’s interview they talked about the night he got “laid” and how that brought in many viewers. Also during the taping of the interview an unexpected thing happens. A random guy gets his cell phone stolen from him and Justin catches the whole thing on video. Justin then offers to send the archive video to the guy to see who the criminal was. It was just a matter of time before Justin caught something illegal on his cam.
The Yahoo article is titled The Real Reality TV which is a great title for this story about the 2 lifecasters. I suggest you take a look at the article and video. http://potw.news.yahoo.com/s/potw/40075/the-real-reality-tv

Kyle the quiet Kansas boy who is turning 22 today plays a key part in the JTV team. He dropped out of MIT to help Justin and the rest of the crew with the new startup. TheRinger is someone who has all around tech skills. He can do hardware and software. He’s gone from doing BattleBots to making it possible to stream live video from anywhere. Without Kyle there would be no Justin.tv.
Happy Birthday to the Ringer.

The date was August 5th, the time was around 11pm pst. Justin and the crew released a brand new Justin.tv with a new look and more importantly some great new features to the site. Here is my review of the new Justin.tv.

Channel Pages

Some of the notable changes of the channel pages are:

Brand New Header for the site

An archive page for each channel with best of Tips and recent Tips

Newly submitted tips now show up in chat and also under the video player after being submitted.

A list of recent channel tips for the current channel your on and also a separate list for recommended tips for all channels

A redesigned JTV video player

Portal Page

The portal page can be seen HERE
I have to admit that I really like the portal page. Of course as you can see they are using coverflow which is used in iTunes and on the iPhone. Hopefully they won’t be sued by apple for “borrowing” coverflow. The portal makes it really easy to browse through all the channels as you can just click an arrow to go to the next casters stream without having to load up a new page. Very handy for those who are channel surfers.

Archive Page

An example of an archive page can be seen HERE The archive I am linking to is the one where Norah falls out of her chair. One of my personal favorites.
I can see the JTV crew have really worked hard on this page and it is almost perfect. 3 new features they added with this updates are:

The ability to download the archive video of the tip! So now you can download your favorite archive.

You can now comment on tips.

Embeddable archive video. JTV now gives you the code so you can embed your favorite tip on your own webpage.

Some changes are needed.

As far as the archives and tips I would like to see them implement the ability to delete a tip or comment that you have made.
Yes I know the portal page is just a beta page at the moment but I think it needs to be worked on to make it load a little quicker. Once the performance of the page is acceptable it should be the default page of justin.tv. Justin should not be the default page for JTV.

So go check out the new Justin.tv page. It’s a big step up from the last designs.
After doing Justine’s app I decided to update Justin’s facebook application also. So both apps are working and ready to be added to your profile. If you would like for me to make an application for another JTV Lifecaster just reply in the comments and I’ll get an app up for that channel.
During those 133 days I have learned to love Justin. Sure he can’t cook or clean or get girls very well and every once in a while he enjoys getting drunk. The only thing that annoys me with Justin is his love of the mustard shorts. He has worn these same yellow shorts day after day for the entire time he has been broadcasting. He has worn them at poker games, meetings and even at lunch with a girl. These shorts need to be destroyed at all costs. Jacob and Norah went on a special op mission to destroy them once and for all but wimped out and returned the shorts to Justin. The JTV fans are calling for one brave soul to rid the earth and universe of lifecasting of the evil Mustard Shorts. The following is the video of Jacob and Norah with the frozen shorts. It was a pretty funny night of Norah.tv.

There is 1 thing missing though for the past 2 days and that is JUSTINE. My favorite lifecaster has been mia everytime I check in. People are saying that she is on vacation and has no internet connection. Which I can relate to after I was without the internet and a computer for 10 days during the cruise. Hopefully when she gets back she goes to almost 24 hours a day of lifecasting. I really enjoy her channel and chatting with her viewers. I guess for the moment I will watch what Justin is up to. Also will be checking out all the new faces on JTV.
